Research- contence page

Images

Five small images have been used. The images go with/ anchor the text that they are next to. Alll the images are of a passport size and of head shots of artist relevent to that magazine.

text

Two types of text used. This makes the contence page look siple and smart. As too many fonts used can look cluttered and tacky. The fonts used are sans seriff fonts, which are ; simple, clear thus easy to read. Text is of a sensible and clear size.

colours

The main two colours used on this particular contence page, are black and white. The text is white on a black background o that it's clear and stands out. The use of two complimenting colours creates a simple and smart oveall look.

layout

All the images have been placed down the right hand side of the page with writing to go with that image down the left. This layout makes the contence page easy to use, as you can easily relate an image to the text.

My double page spread

Basied on the reasearch i did into double page spreads from other simmilar magazine. I established, the sort of; images, colours,layout and content, that should be appropriate to use in my double page spread.


Images

The majority of double page spreads i looked at. Used a few small images alongside a larger image. I found that in all the double page spreads i looked at. The sorts of images being used were, mid to long shots of the subject matter of the double page spread. The larger images tended to be the long shots. As a result, i have tryed to follow this as my bassis for my images on my double page spread. As you can see, i have used (like in my research) a few small images of either mid or long shot, alongside a larger image, all of the same subject matter which links to my front cover and contence page.

Content

During my reasearch, i established. That the commen content for a double page spread of this genre, is an interveiw with a band or artist. So as a result this is what i chose to do on my double page spread.

Layout

In terms of layout, the double page spreads i looked at and reasearched for this genre of magazine. All had one side of the double page spread that was heavily image based with less text. And the other side therefor being for the bulk of the text. The double page spreads i looked at also had quotes enlarged, so that at a flick through the magazine, you could see a quick insight into the interveiw. I have tryed to follow these ideas. By having all mt images on the left hand side page. On the left page, i have little text, and what text there is is quotes, so like i found in my research, at a quick glance the reader can see what the artical's about. I then have the main bulk of text (like in my research) on the right page.

colours

The colours used in the double page spreads i researched. Linked to the colours used on the front cover and throughout the rest of the magazine. They have also stuck to one or two colours to make it look less cluttered and tacky and simple. Therefore i have used the same colour schem as on my front and in my contence page.

Research- contence page

This is the contence page of a skateboard/music magazine.It has used a range of different things that make it relevant to it's target audiance, easy to understand and look profesional. This has all been done through; images, fonts, colours and content.

Images
There is only one main image that fills the whole of the page. They have used an image that relates to the genre of the magazine. The image has been convertied into black and white, to make it easier to add text onto.

Text
The text is all in white so that it shows up against the image. For titles and page numbers, they have boldened the font and put it italics aswell as making it slightly larger han the rest of the text. This insures that the titles and page numbers stand out therefore making them easy to find.

Colours
The coulor scheme for this particular magazine contence page. Is black and white this gives it a simple looks and looks smart and professional.

I looked at my research feedback on images people would like to/expect to see on an indie/rock magazine front cover, and based on that i took my images. The main things i had to achieve in the images(based on research) i took and were going to use for the front cover were;

- Image of artist with instrument e.g Guitar
- Image of band members.
- Someone pulling a rock pose.

With this as my basis for taking my images. I deliberately made sure that the person had a guitar or was pulling a rock pose. I think i Have successfully done this in the images I've taken.

Evaluation of research for front cover

Based on the research and questionnaires that i have gathered. I have a good idea now of what my indie/rock music magazine should look like in terms of: colour, layout,imagery and text.

Colours
The majority of people from the questionnaire feedback, said that that type of magazine should use dark colors such as blacks and greys etc. A lot of the magazines i looked at of an indie rock genre also use dominantly dark colours but with one bright complimenting colour such as red or yellow. As a result of this information, I'm going to use similar colours, so dark colours with one bright complimenting colours for the front cover of my magazine.

imagry
What i got from my questionare infomation, was that the majority of people expected to see images of bands or bang members. Also analising front covers, it's aparent that the majority of them have images of band members on them. As a result the images i will use and take will be of band members.Also alot of feed back from my questionares, said that images should not only be of band members but of them with their instruments. As a result my images will reflext these results.

The contence of the majoriy of magazines of this genre that i reasesched, was gigg information, inteviews with bands and reviews on albums (things along those lines) so i will make sure my straplines will reflect and be similar to this.

Research- double page spread

Imagery
Three images have been used , two of which are for decorative purposes (the skul and the pocket watches) where as the other image is of the band. All of the images link together as the band is called the hours so the watches fit in with their name. The type of image that's been used for the band image is a close shot, just of their heads.

Colours
The three colours that have been used are ; Red, white and black. These colours comliment each other. Titels have been done in red to make them stand out. The colours used, also relate to the themes in this double page spread. As the skul represents death, and red represents blood also black's associated with death. The use of simple, complimenting coloursmakes it look sophisticated and neat.

Layout
The imagry is very much in a line across the middle of the page, with the text either side. This means that the imagery is the focal point as it's in the center. The quote is very icolated from the rest of the text making it standout. The majority of text is on the left hand side with the image sandwiched in the midle.

Reasearch-double page spread

Imagery

five images have been used over all, again like the other double page spreads i've looked at. Again simialr to the previous, one imageshas been used as the main image, with smaller images to go with it. The main images is a medium shot taken slightly from above. The other images they have used are either mid shots or long shots.

colours

Over all five colours have been use. All of wich are fairly bright colours but that all compliment each other. This use of colours gives a fun feel to it and the colours used combined with the conent, suggests that this magazine is for a younger target audiance target at a females.

layout

The layout for this magazine is very busy and fairly cluttered, with a ot going on. A lot of the things overlap fitting a lot on the page. This busy layout with a lot going on, gives off an idea of fun.

Fonts/text

Overall five fonts have been used. All the fonts are simple and easy to read and all go with each other and compliment and are appropriate for the overall style.

The words Brother and love are largest and boldest of all the fonts on the page as that is obviously the main theme of this double page spread.

Research for double page spreads

Imagery

Four images have been used, all of wich fot with the overall look of the double page spread, as they are all in black and white. There is one main image and three smaller images. All of the images are on one page of the double page spread rather than being on both pages. All of the images used are either midshots or medium shots.

Text

only three types of font have been used, one for the quotations, one for the title and one for the text. This keeps it looking simple and not over the top. His name is in the lasrgest and boldest font making it stand out .

colours

All but the quotes (which are in a bright blue) is in black and white. This makes the quotes standout and makes it a bit more interesting as if it were all in just black and white it would be a bit boring and dull.

layout

Pratically the whole of the first page of the double page spread is imagery with acception of the quotations. And the whole of the second page is purley text.

Research- mixmag

colours

To make it simple, only two colours have been used. These two colours are complimentry colours giving it a profesional look. A pattern has also been created in the font coulours, as it goes ;blue,white,blue,white ect. This makes the cover look very decrotive.

The background to the image they've used is white,which again compliments and fits in with the over all colour scheme.

Image

The type of shot theyhave used is a long shot as they have to fit a large group of people into the shot. I n the image, pretty much all of the people are looking into the camra (so it looks as though they are looking at you) this makes the veiwer feel involved and makes it feel personal.

Genre

The genre of this magazine is club music (you can tell this by reading the straplines and by the title) The word "mix" in the name mix mag, relates to mixing (a tecnique used by DJ's in clubs)

you can tell that it's aimed at young adults, as the epopel used in the image are of that age.

Research- DAZED

Dazed is a music magazine for (like Q) older teens and young adults. I have chosen to research magazines aimed at this target audience, as that is the target audience i want my magazine to be aimed at.It's a music magazine that lo0ks at pop and indie music which is also another reason why I'm looking at it as that is the genre of magazine that i want to create. The overall theme of this magazine is mystery and confusion (which all connects to the title "DAZED" this has been portrayed in; fonts, imagery and layout.

Image

The image used is that of a young woman, surrounded in smoke. The fact that a young woman has been used in the image,makes it relate to the target audience of older teens/young adults as she too is a young adult. The fact that she is surrounded in smoke, also connects to the title "DAZED" as smoke and not being able to see clearly through the smoke connects to the idea of being dazed.

Fonts

They have only used three main colours; red, blue and white. All of which compliment each other and Tye in with the colours used in the image. This idea of confusion had also been reflected in the strap line "Bat for lashes" as every letter is a different font or style; some being in italics, some being serif, some being San serif and some being in capitals and some in lower case. All of which creates a quirky look.

layout

again this theme of confusion has been carried through in terms of layout. As there is no real format to the layout as there are few strap lines, they are of varied odd sizes and randomly positioned and spaced on the cover, rather than having a colloquial look/ layout.

I made sure the colours that i used in the contence page matched and complimented the colours i used in the front cover.

again i made sure that the images related to the target audiance of my magazine and conectid to the images used on the front cover.

I also ensured that the things in my contence page related to the straplines on the front cover.

pelimanary task- front cover

The target audiance for my magazine, was students in year 10 and year 11 who are doing their GCSES. I have tryed to portray this by; images i used, content of the magazine and colours used. I choose to do this type of magazine as, as i have recently done my GCSES it would be easy to talk about.

Images
I have used one main image and 2 smaller images, the images are of year 11 students which makes it relate to it's target audiance. I have tryed to apply that rule of thirds to all of the images i have used. I have fitted the requrements of the breif, by using midshot images. I made the main image black and white so that it fits with the colour scheme and looks more sophisticated (wich makes it apeal to it's target audiance).

Content
I made sure the conten of my magazine, was relevent to it's target audiance and linked to the images and themes i have used. The aim is to help students with their GCSES so content relates to that e.g. 100 top tips

Colours
I tryed to keep the colours simple, so only used 3 colours that complimented each other so that the magazine looked simple yet effective.
I also made sure the colours i used covered the target audiance of both boys and girls (so not using bright pinks and girly colours) as this magazine is intended for both boys and girls.

pelimanary task- layering tecniques on photoshop

The brief for this task was that we had to create a magazine page that uses/displays my ability to use photoshop for layering techniques. I decided to create a perfume magazine and used these required layering techniques on order to do this.

I first of all, chose three images off the Internet; two of Idena Menzel (a well known singer) and one of a perfume bottle. I made one of the images of idena menzel my background image. I did this by making it fit the whole of the whole A4 page. I then filled it in using the paint bucket in a pale blue and changed the opacity that the image could then be seen. this then created the perfect background for me to apply other layers on top of it.

The second layer, required me to cut out around the person in the image. I did this by using the magnetic lasso tool to go out of the outline of the image. I then copied and pasted this to my background that i created.I also do this to the image of the perfume bottle.

Lastly to complete the advert, i added appropriate text.

Over all this way of layering is fairly successful, although using the magnetic lasso, often leaves you with an un-neat edge. Which often means that it can look unprofessional.

Research- Q magazine

The genre of this magazine is that of pop music. It is aimed at older teens/young adults. I can tell this form the coulr, style, content, imagery and fonts that Q magazine have used.

Imagery
This main image is that of lilly allen. who is a well known pop artist amongst teens and young adults. Which is one of the many reasons that i can tell that this magazone is aimed at that target audiance. Also the content of the image also sugests that it's for older teens to young adults as the image they have used would clearly be inapropriate for children. The type of shot that's been used, is a long shot as lilly allens full body is in veiw. The image anchors the strapline "sexy beast" as in the image is Lily Allen in a sexual pose and dress to represent the word "sexy" and the black panthas representing the word "beast".

Fonts
There are only three fonts that have been used, this gives a profesional and simple yet effective look. As the use of too many fonts often looks cheep and cluttered. The name "Lily Allen" is center of the page and in the largest font, as she is the main focus of the magazine. They have used a sans serif font on "lily allen" to make it clear and bold.

Colours
They have again kept it simple by syicking to the use of only 4 colours; red, blue, black and white. All of which compliment and anchor the image and the magazine title of "Q".
